ARTIST HISTORY
Formed in 2002 The Outside was born from an ad the bass player Will, ran in the Village Voice seeking out "creative musicians". Will, Damien (drums) and Ben (guitar) gathered and instantly started sculpting the sound and style that would later become The Outside. Soon after, the missing link, Tree (vocals) auditioned...but was not taken. "Bottom line is, we weren't ready for her. We had just formed and needed time to mature and grow musically". Almost a year later, Tree came back. It was obvious that they had found their voice.
Since then The Outside have continued on their relentless charge to break through the walls of the alternative rock/post-hardcore genre. Their 2004 release "You Are The Alpha...Gracias Por Nada" gained them numerous festival appearances and critical acclaim. Billboard and Taxi selecting the group as 1 of 6 fInalists from over 1,000 to perform in the fInal NE show of the Discmakers Independent Music World Series was a high point. As was being a critic's pick for Cincinnati's Midpoint Music Festival.
Their newly released, self produced disc "Something Urgent" brilliantly captures the bands ability to write relevant songs that soundtrack life while never sacrificing their live energy for studio sound. Donning references to early Pumpkins, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Helmet, the disc is another statement in the band's manifesto to create unique and provocative material that catapults the listener into a live show full of emotion and not easily forgotten.

The Outside is the anti-Evanescence. Frontwoman Tree's vocals are spit out Kittie-style or released in a sugary Beth orton vibrato. The music is heavy but not abrasive or ham-fisted; in fact, the arrangements are befitting a Prog-Metal band (think Tool, not Dream Theatre). Dynamics are all over the board and also maintained long enough to establish a mood rather than toggling back and forth for effect. Having said all of that, fans of Evanescence will probably love them, too. Their second EP, You Are The Alpha...Gracias Por Nada, has generated a huge buzz, and demand for their stellar live show has them gassing up the van more and more often (including three trips to Cincy this year). With festival and magazine appearances increasing exponentially, The Outside are truly a band on their way up, but definitely one that will make it there with their artistic integrity intact. (Kim Gordon with Deftones or Ken Andrews with Sleater-Kinney)

:: LIVE REVIEW - MIDPOINT MUSIC FESTIVAL 2005 ::
The Outside, a New York group that enthralled its Cincinnati-area audience at Chicks RockFest in April, came back to town to deliver a ferocious set at Alchemize. Conversations in the buzzing room hushed as the band launched a guitar assault and a massive attack of percussion, led by the relentless charge of frontwoman Tree's fierce vocals.
The Outside's vocalist, Tree, raged on the mic with a raw power that even outroared the New York rock band's forceful percussion.

:: CD REVIEW - YOU ARE THE ALPHA ::
I wasn't sure what to expect when I pulled The Outside's EP from its simple jacket sleeve (with minimalist, tongue-in-cheek cover). The next seventeen minutes plus, however, proved a blissful rock n' roll listening experience. The New York-based band's female vocalist, Tree, has great range, capable of belting out lyrics over crunching guitars one minute, then turning warm, seductive and soothing the next.The music is beautiful at every gain and distortion level. I'm really looking forward to future efforts.

:: CD REVIEW - YOU ARE THE ALPHA ::
Sounding like Yeah Yeah Yeahs on steroids, The Outside's barrage of melodic musings and off-kilter rhythms and timings intrigues and excites. The quartet's latest five-track release hits hard yet knows when to tone it down so the differences in songs like "10%" feel that much more striking. Able to maintain a dreamy female vocal that viciously morphs into a guttural growl without warning help The Outside fine tune its usually dissonant yet uniquely angular wall of sound that at times is reminiscent of Tool clashing with Helmet, especially on the warped cosmic blues-metal of "Milky Way". Dynamic as hell, heavy as lead, and enthralling throughout, this disc contains some post hardcore of the most volatile variety and should be handled with such regard.
